Title: The Gardenia Curse | Author: C.M. Savage | Genre: Middle Grade Fantasy | Number of Pages: 158 | Release Date: October 26, 2015

Book Description: Thirteen-year-old Eva Thomas finds herself in a life threatening mystery when her dreams become real. Night after night, she is transported to Dreamland, where an evil being, the Shadow, wants her dead. Can Eva save herself and her dreams before it’s too late? Exhausted from troubled sleep, Eva stumbles through her days in a new town where her grandmother is known as an eccentric and in a new school where a bully has decided Eva needs to be put in her place. Eva is left feeling alone and uncertain until she meets Alice, a quirky classmate with non-stop questions about Eva’s family. Is Alice a friend or is she after something more?

In Dreamland, Eva is constantly on the run from the Shadow, even after she meets Herman, her dream-guide. Will Herman be able to protect Eva from the Shadow and shed some light on why the Shadow wants her dead? Or are Eva’s dreams destined to remain a nightmare?

Mystery, evil and a touch of romance—all in a night’s dream.

Q & A with C.M. Savage

Q:Tell us about yourself.

A:First off, I want to say thank you for hosting me. I’m so excited The Gardenia Curse has been out for a year now. I’m a mother of two wonderful elementary school age girls, a wife and overall creative creature. I love animals and prior to having a family, worked with endangered Hawaiian birds, both in the field and in captivity. I’ve also worked with birds of prey and mammals that were injured or otherwise unable to be released back to the wild. After children though, I wanted to be able to be home and focus on the family. I decided returning to my passion for writing would be a good way to do that. I don’t always have a ton of time to write since my family does come first and I seem to fall asleep with my girls at bedtime more often than not. Doing this, unfortunately, cuts out what has been my prime writing time. With my youngest in school five days a week now though, I’m excited to find more time during the day to work on my craft. Our family moved back to Bend, Oregon during the summer. I love seeing the seasons again and look forward to the first snowfall of the year. Although the girls’ new school does not have a library for me to volunteer in like their last school, I have been able to volunteer in the classrooms to help with crafts and as a driver for field trips. Being active in their school is important to me. I’ve also recently come back from a six-year hiatus in Taekwondo and am excited to get my body and mind back into shape. I also love to read and am so happy that I have passed that down to my girls. We are a family of readers.

Q:What inspired your book, The Gardenia Curse?

A:My husband. I had a scene playing around in my head, but I couldn’t really get the story I wanted to develop around it. One night, my husband made a comment about dreams and things just clicked. His comment gave me the missing element I needed to create Dreamland and Eva’s story.

Tell us about your main character.

Q:What other books have you written?

A:The Gardenia Curse is my first published book, but I have plans for a sequel and a prequel.

Q:What do you think readers will find most appealing about your book?

A:I think readers will get caught up in the fast pace of Eva’s story. I’ve been told, once someone starts the book, they don’t want to put it down. Personally, I really like the budding relationship between Herman and Eva. I’m excited to develop it more and see where it leads them.

Q:How did you come up with the idea for your book cover?

A:My publisher, Saguaro Books, chose the cover. With a title like The Gardenia Curse though, it wasn’t a surprise to me that a gardenia was chosen.

Q:What are you currently working on?

A:Currently, I am dividing my time between the sequel to The Gardenia Curse and a Native American inspired story. When I get stuck on one, I let my brain mull things over as I work on the other. For now it’s working. I know at some point one will take my complete focus until I get the whole story down. I’m curious to see which one it will be.

Q:How can readers discover more about you and your work?

A:They can go to my website, www.cmsavage.com, follow me on Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/AuthorCMSavage/, or follow me on Twitter, https://twitter.com/AuthorCMSavage. My online presence has been pretty quiet, but I have plans to change that. With my youngest in school five days a week now, I’m starting to figure out a writing schedule that works. I have plans to blog more and share snippets of my writing as the books progress.
